Rare 2020 Chevy COPO Camaro Race Car Comes Up for Auction on Copart
Anyone behind the wheel of a V8 Camaro pretends he or she is driving a race car around a track or blasting down the drag strip as soon as a stoplight turns red. We all do it, so don’t be ashamed for sharing in the fun.
Now, as proof dreams really do sometimes come true, Chevy really does make a racetrack version of the Camaro, and Copart happens to have one of these rare finds up for auction that you can make your own.
2020 COPO Camaro
Chevy made the first COPO Camaro in 1969. Since the revival of the marque in 2012, Chevy has made 69 COPO Camaros each year as a tribute to the original. Number two out of the 69 made in 2020 is up for auction on Copart as a charitable donation to benefit disabled veterans. This model features a black body with a grey carbon fiber hood that thrills the eye as it quickens the pulse.
Why COPO?
COPO stands for “Central Office Production Order.” It may not sound flashy, but it means these rare gems were special orders from the factory. They can only be purchased through an American dealership, and you can’t just walk up and buy one. Aspiring racers must enter a lottery, and the winners must put down $14,000 deposit and wait for the Camaro to be built. Like the popular song lyrics say, it's the hardest part.
By The Numbers
The COPO Camaro on Copart has a supercharged 350 cc big block V8 engine mated to a three-speed automatic transmission cranking out 580 wheelie popping horsepower. That’s enough power to do a quarter mile in under 9 seconds with a trap speed of just under 142 mph. Some sources say it tops out at around 200 mph.
True Track Car
The COPO Camaro is not to be driven by the faint of heart, nor on city streets. This is a true racetrack car and isn’t street legal. That’s why it comes with a bill of sale, rather than a title since you can’t register it. So banish any visions of smoking everyone at the stoplight. This muscle car was built to smoke people at the drag strip and track alone.
But don’t let that discourage you from your dreams of owning a race car. Private racetracks and/or clubs operate around the country. Many hobbyists get their adrenaline flowing by blasting down these tracks on weekends and after work.
Fully Equipped Race Car
This COPO Camaro comes complete with roll cage and even braking chute harness, and trailing wheelie bars. Chevy claims it comes competition ready for the NHRA, although we have no doubt some drivers won’t be able to resist the urge to upgrade a few bits here and there.
