What Do I Need To Know About Licensing & Documentation?

Last Updated: Jan 30, 2024

We get a lot of questions about licensing and documentation requirements. In this blog, we’ll give you the general rundown of what you need to know.

Every state has their own regulations pertaining to buying and selling vehicles at auction. So, what vehicles you can buy will be determined by the laws of where the vehicles you want to buy are located. You can learn more about the different state requirements on our State Licensing Overview page.

Document Assistance at Registration

After you choose a Membership level in the registration process, Copart will ask you a few questions to determine where you want to buy and what types of credentials you’ll need. Check with your local and state governments about acquiring any licenses you don’t currently hold.

All Members must have a valid government-issued ID, such as a driver’s license, passport, or ID card. This helps prevent fraud and protects you from identity theft on Copart’s platform.

Submit all your documents through our Document Uploader either when you set up your account, or later through the Account menu at the top right of the screen. Document Uploader is where you’d send any new credentials or licenses you may acquire after setting up your Copart account.

What if I Don’t Have The Right Licenses/Documentation?

If you lack the right documentation to buy a vehicle, Copart can connect you with a Broker with the proper credentials. If you are an international buyer, we can connect you with a Certified Reseller or a Copart Lounge operator who provides similar services internationally.

What if one of my documents has expired?

Copart can’t accept documents, licenses or credentials that have expired. This is one of the most common reasons documents uploaded by new Members are declined. When you acquire a current credential, delete the old one in the Document Uploader and then upload a scan of the document or a photo of it taken with your mobile device.

Member Licensing will automatically be notified that there is an updated document for them to review and approve. You don’t need to contact Member Services about the new upload, and doing so may slow down the review of your documents as our team members stay very busy.

What Are No License Required Vehicles?

No License Required vehicles can be purchased by the general public without a business or dealer’s license under the laws of the state where the vehicle is located. These can be Salvage Title vehicles, vehicles sold at auction by private sellers, or other situations allowed by state laws.

To find vehicles you can buy without a license, select the No License Required filter at the top of the Search Results page. It will show you only vehicles that you can bid on. Use the additional filters to narrow in on the vehicle(s) that fit(s) your needs.

In Conclusion

We hope this helps clear up any confusion concerning licensing requirements so you can get to bidding & winning. If you still have questions, contact Member.Services@copart.com
